DeMar’s a bit fuzzy on this one….

It is no secret that I am both a fan and a critic of Gary DeMar. He has done the best thing for popularizing preterism by authoring his most excellent work Last Days Madness. He is also doing some of the most damage by being theologically reckless and irresponsible by refusing to denounce a damnable heresy. Not only refusing to denounce it…. there are others who do that, but he misrepresents reality by stating that hyperpreterists do not deny the resurrection. I speak about this in my recent Unchained Radio interview and yes I have brought this up personally many times in the past with Gary both in email and on radio programs. It is my prayer that he continue his most excellent work and shake off the taint of passively promoting heresy and supporting hyperpreterist sites that not only deny the resurrection (bad enough) but are diving into emergent nonsense and universalism. Gary recognizes the tailspin of the hyperpreterist movement and has ceased from participating in eschatology conferences with them, but he needs to do so much more. He is a passive participant in their prostitution of his beliefs as closet hyperpreterism and many are confused and led astray. I know, I get their emails, and have to mop up some of the sewage.

Now here is an example. In a recent article Gary stated the following:

Randall Price is an archaeologist, author of numerous books on Bible prophecy, and president of World of the Bible Ministries. He writes that “Preterism has invaded the church, bring in confusion and division to many congregations that have historically held to the future return of Jesus Christ.” Preterism hasn’t “invaded the church.” It has a long and respected history. Actually, the church is being reintroduced to the position since a form of that was set forth in the fourth-century work of Christian historian Eusebius (c. 260-341).

Gary does a great disservice here. First Price is not only speaking about hyperpreterists who deny the future return of Christ in his alarm but orthodox preterists as well. Gary does not correct him on this point by firmly affirming the future return of Christ. Second, Gary then goes on to leave the impression that all preterists deny the future return of Christ (he does mitigate this in the footnote) and then to insinuate that such a denial has a long and respected history!!!!! That is incredibly poor writing and clarity for such a gifted author.

What Gary says is true of preterism. It is NOT true of hyperpreterism. The only LONG history that hyperpreterism can claim is one of infamy and heresy in denying the future bodily resurrection of believers. Price should be applauded for being concerned about that and taken to task for his denigration of the real historical preterism, orthodox preterism, the kind that Gary himself holds.
