Contradicting the ad hom claims of many hyerpreterist who publicly state they never read “Preteristblog” Rich over at preterismdebate writes,
Paul on the Preteristblog stated…
…This is an interesting quote from Sam’s analysis of BCS, and one which I agree 100% with. Science is limited in what it can discover. This same understanding is presented by John Walton in his fantastic book The Lost World of Genesis One. In his book John Walton uses a cake analogy. He states that science can only operate within its layer of the cake. It can not approach any other layer, such as the spiritual layer, one that deals with things like teleology. I agree 100% with Walton too. So, since we all seem to agree that science can discover, but only discover within the sphere in which it rest, let’s explore that sphere.

I’m thinking Rich is a bit misinformed or is reading Dr. Walton’s book with rose colored glasses. Dr. Walton claims “neo-darwinism” is a viable option because it is the “reigning paradigm” within the scientific community. Yet “neo-darwinism” is based on the premise humanities existence is the result of natural processes denying the Supernatural out of hand. Indeed Dr. Walton conceding the point to Darwin writes,
That God is the Creator of human beings must be taken seriously. We continually seek understanding of biblical texts for what they communicate. Whatever evolutionary processes lead to the development of animal life, primates and even prehuman hominids, my theological convictions lead me to posit substantive discontinuity between that process and the creation of the historical Adam and Eve. Rather than cause-and-effect continuity, though it remains difficult to articulate how God accomplished this. The point I want to make is perhaps Genesis 2 and Romans 5 do not pose as many problems as some have though, allowing us to reap from science understandings of how life developed up to and including the creation of the first humans. (The Lost World of Genesis One, John Walton, IVP, pg 139,140)
At least Dr. Walton maintains we need to take “seriously” God in the process of the creation of human existence. I’m sure God appreciated that sentiment. Dr. Walton who has clearly bought into the neo-darwinian model explaining man’s origins recognizes the dilemma that “explanation” poses for the Biblical text and therefore is “continually” seeking new understanding of the God’s special revelation in an effort to conform God’s standard to the “reigning paradigm” of science. Dr. Walton’s premise is nothing but a capitulation denying out of hand the concept, “Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Col 2:3 ESV
However, the quote of Sam Frost to which Rich alludes, clearly states his presupposition is that whatever science may pose it first and foremost must conform to the truth revealed in God’s standard. This isn’t Dr. Walton’s position, Dr. Walton’s position is the polar opposite. Rich, I think you have either misunderstood Sam’s quote, which may be due to the fact I only provided a part of Sam’s view, or Dr. Walton’s point. However, the case maybe you have misunderstood both.

Sam,
I loved your article, great job, however I hope you explain to Rich where he is wrong.
The naivety of Rich is something to behold.
