The Measuring Cup hath broken

The measure of a man’s word is how faithfully he keeps it to his opponents.
As an illustration, in the first episode of Xena, there is this battle between her and…. (oh I can’t remember his name so we will just say for now, a mean, nasty, evil warlord - MNEW for short). Xena was trying to protect her hometown village (which earlier in the episode tried to stone her) and came face to face with MNEW who wanted to kill and plunder. So, she and MNEW made a deal, they would fight with staffs on a particular catwalk, and whoever hit the ground first, dies. When all is said and done MNEW is lying on the ground flat on his back with Xena standing on his chest with these classic words, “I haven’t touched the ground yet…… but you have.” However she agrees to let him live on his oath that he would leave that area. So as Xena turns to go back to the village people (no, not the ones who do YMCA) one of MNEW’s henchman is just about to throw a dagger into her back when MNEW sees him and puts a dagger into him instead saying, “A deal’s a deal.” If a person can’t keep their word to their rivals, then their word is cheap.
