In episode 60 I deal with two recent objections I encountered in a TheologyWeb discussion thread to my position that the Olivet Discourse, at least up to verse 34, has been fulfilled. As a result, I have a lot of drywall patching to do at my house. And my head hurts. The two objections deal with whether Matthew 24:34 can be translated as “that generation” and if all the stones of the Temple predicted in Matthew 24:1-2 have really all been thrown down.

The problem is solved for me in that Jesus is answering the disciples based on their preconcieved notions of having these things conflated. His answer is, “this is what is going to happen to YOU in this generation” and “heaven and earth WILL perish…but THAT day no man knows” (vv.35,36). It’s a two fold answer. The “wrath of God” has theses characteristic events with them (wars, rumors of wars, plagues, famines) as they have so often had in the OT “comings” of YHWH. So, in effect, Jesus is saying, THIS is what is coming to you guys, but this is NOT the dissolution of heavens and earth…that will come, eventually, but it is not for you know that time. In other words, the dissolution of heaven and earth is not to be equated with the razing in AD 70, although the descriptive elements so associated with the “wrath of God” comings in time and space appear to be the same. This, for me, solves the problem.
One of your better podcasts - thanks!
@Sam, I absolutely agree. I did parse that out in depth in Episode 59, Sheep Go to Heaven, Goats Go to Hell.
@Robin, thank you so much! I hope you do know that I value your opinion.
