Correcting a flying monkey

One of Samuel’s flying monkeys is posting some really stupid stuff over at another blog. One of them is the fact that “Samuel Frost” is really large in the tag cloud to the right at this blog. At first I thought, “Self, he could not possibly be THAT retarded.” Then I considered who it was and changed my mind.

Let me educate curious George. I will do it in bullet points to make it easier, unfortunately I can’t explain it in pictures, so he will have to read.

1. “Tags” are different from “Categories.” We don’t have a category cloud. I don’t put individual people as categories.

2. Tags are rarer than categories, every post should have a category, not all have tags.

3. Therefore OBVIOUSLY if there is a particular person who is the alleged “scholar” of the movement, they will be tagged more often. I think George is jealous he isn’t mentioned.

4. This blog underwent a radical theme change between when it was part of The PreteristSite and now that it is on its own. I didn’t use categories for a long time in the beginning; thus in the tag cloud HYPERPRETERISM (is larger than Samuel Frost) when it shouldn’t appear at all as it is a category and not a tag.

Thus, the fact is that the system is inconsistent and the tag cloud is a very poor way to judge what is spoken about most. As interesting as he may be, Samuel is not THAT interesting.

I think in order to introduce more uniformity, I am going to ask the authors to use both tags and categories in a blended way. That means categories (with the exception of so and so’s posts) will also appear as a tag, but a tag will not always be a category. For instance, look at how I handled this post for an example. However, due to years of prior inconsistency, a tag cloud is more for eye-candy than true statistical analysis but desperately grasping heretical monkey paws will clutch at anything.

I know the flying chimp won’t even understand that last paragraph. Fly along now and keep trying to carry Dorothy back to the wicked witch of the west. Too bad the demonic witchery that is hyperpreterism is already melted under the pure water of the Word of truth.

Buh-bye.

I have some very happy news to announce that I have been holding off on doing until I had time to speak with the person and obtain permission to speak – and that is that hyperpreterist Roderick Edwards is now Former Hyperpreterist Roderick Edwards. You guys may remember Roderick from the interview he and I had over the usage of the terms “preterism,” “hyperpreterism,” and the like. You can listen to that old interview here:

At that time, I had sensed an open-ness in Roderick that led me to ask a group of friends to pray for him and his return to orthodoxy, and since that time he has very much been on my heart. We had kept in touch and had our agreements and disagreements, and this news makes me very very happy.

Roderick has recently given an interview about his changing views on Gene Cook’s show which can be listened to here:

Interview on The Narrow Mind

Please be patient with Roderick and not expect him to be completely clear on exactly where he is going to “land” doctrinally. He was a hyperpreterist for 15 years, these things do not get undone overnight.

Please visit his blog about his journey here:

The Unpreterist

Roderick’s main site is here:

The Kingdom Come

I really wanted to post this (and will add this to my page that hosts my interview with Roderick) because I had been very highly critical of Roderick’s doctrine and at times what I felt was an improper “spin” on the words of others. When people change their views (and I firmly believe that it is hyperpreterism itself with its cultic mentality that causes people to use questionable methods and not some inherent character flaw – I have always had respect for Roderick’s personal integrity), it is an obligation of those who have been critical to be just as quick to note the change and give tremendous credit where credit is due.

Other preterists – PLEASE – Roderick has no desire to be some poster boy former hyperpreterist – please don’t make him so. Please drop him a word of encouragement at his blog and keep him in your prayers.

Is Hyper-Preterism Dying Before Our Eyes?

These are great times indeed. The pernicious heresy of hyper-preterism appears to be devouring itself as its adherents scatter and divide and some noteable proponents renounce their former beliefs. Of particular note is Todd Dennis, the owner of PreteristArchive which used to be a vociferously pro-hyperpreterist site. Todd has publicly renounced his hyperpreterism of ten years declaring himself to be an “idealist preterist.” Quite honestly, at this point, I don’t even know precisely what that means, and have inquired of Todd for further clarification if he feels comfortable doing so at this point. But I am greatly encouraged by this warning that Todd saw fit to put on an article hosted at the PreteristArchive by hyperpreterist David Green:

Warning: This “full preterist” related material is being archived as part of the balanced representation of all pret views, but its premise is deemed by the curator to be “toxic theology” which subtly draws people away from the things of the spirit due to the fleshly “letter-based” appeal (core components being extra-biblical history and logic — there being not one single verse which looks back to fulfillment in ad70, the system is based entirely upon deductive reasoning). Therefore, this warning is being attached. If you have already adopted this viewpoint, please consider — has your attention been drawn toward or away from Jesus Christ and him crucified? (i.e. what is the focal point of your Christian life.. AD70 or AD30?) Please note that the earliest known adherents of full preterism later abandoned it, as have many contemporary former full peterists, including the curator of this archive (full pret for over a decade). The “past spiritual resurrection” view is the theology that Paul condemns in II Timothy 2:17-18, so please proceed with extreme caution. - TD

Amen. Despite this, I would not recommend PreteristArchive since it still hosts outright heresy and presents it as “the Internet’s Only Balanced Look at Preterism” – as if “balanced” meaning “anything goes” is a good thing. I would not recommend a Christological site if it insistented upon hosting Arian arguments for the sake of “balance,” but until I learn otherwise (i.e. that Todd still denies the future Second Coming and bodily resurrection – which I am presuming at this point, he does not deny these things but I do not know for sure), I will no longer refer to the PreteristArchive as a “hyperpreterist site” but one that hosts hyperpreterist material. If Todd would put a bold disclaimer like that on all pages containing the rank heresy, I would commend him highly.

But in either event, praise God that Todd has renounced the hymenaean heresy. And unlike Chilton, the darling “convert” of the hyperpreterists, Todd is not post-brain-injury but of sound mind and health.

Hyper-preterism is dying – the old guard desparately tries to keep afloat while former adherents tender their renouncements and others drift off into postmodern goobledegook. It couldn’t happen to a fouler heresy.
