In his transparent attempt to use Dr. Talbot and cause division, Samuel wrote a piece which contained multiple problematic statements.
To quote another Reformed scholar, we “stand on the shoulders of giants as dwarfs. We cannot see as much as we see without those shoulders, yet the giant cannot complain that he cannot see what we see, for we stand over him.” This is what we are doing.
It appears that Samuel fundamentally misunderstands and thus misuses that statement. Of course he hyperliteralizes it as being an actual person standing on the shoulder of another actual person. It is as silly as Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” commercials which totally fail to miss the point that Apple’s commercials are not trying to claim that the two characters are literal operating systems, but rather anthropomorphisms.
Likewise, in the above saying, the “men” are the foundational principles of the Christian faith that the Spirit has given to the Church. Samuel isn’t standing on any “shoulders.” He has shot the men in the knees. He isn’t standing on essential doctrine but denying it.
It is amazing to me that no one at SGP pointed out this shallow bit of argumentation.
Recently one of the hyperpreterists made the humorous comment that “if they posted their mama’s cookie recipe online that we’d probably criticize even that”. Well, if yo mama’s recipe (like the hyperpreterist theology) substituted poison for healthy ingredients you better betcha we’d say something (a little Palin lingo there).
The hyperpreterists don’t get it. They are putting forth a redefined version of Christianity — a version that departs from everything that Christianity has been for 2000 years & yet they don’t think anyone should question them? And it is not just their theology we are questioning, because yes indeed their character is driving their theology & their theology is driving their character.
So anyhow, I am a happy person. I make jokes, I laugh, I make others laugh. I like to smile & have fun — often at my own expense. With that said, I now present a 40 second video presentation called “Criticizing Yo Mama’s Cookies” (maybe the hyperpreterists will understand this????)
I was reading some of the comments made on Sam Frost’s article from which my original quote two blogs ago came, and one of the participants said:
I am often in conflict with myself on the continuing value of the Scriptures when viewed from the Preterist perspective. The central thesis of Preterism, as I understand it, is that all things written have been fulfilled. Now I know its not a pleasant thought but this leaves us surely with that reality of which Paul wrote in 1Cor:13 that all that remains is faith hope and charity, because the Perfect, that is the New Covenant, has come.
This person is taking things to their logical conclusion, and I always admire that kind of stand. However, no wonder Paul called an idea a faith-wrecking gangrene. Nolo Scriptura. Heresy begets heresy….. I suspect Arianism would find a welcome place in the hyper-preterist fold given enough time.
The Rapture Index as of May
4, 2009 is at 165. That is an increase of 8 points!!! Might as well
get nude now (you know how those clothes are all left behind) and stand
in your living room and gaze up and wait. If you have a skylight, that
might be less messy when you go flying through the ceiling.
